The archaeological project on Skopje Fortress is part of the programme of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia and the Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski.

The programme of the archaeological project on Skopje Fortress has two phases:

The implementation of this project was preceded by an establishment of a scholarly council, made of distinguished experts: Vera Bitrakova Grozdanova, Ph.D; Dragi Mitrevski, Ph.D; Elica Maneva, Ph.D; Viktor Lilčić, Ph.D; Elizabeta Dimitrova, Ph.D. and Kiril Trajkovski.
Dragi Mitrevski, Ph.D., professor at the Institute for History of Art and Archaeology at the Faculty of Philosophy at Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje has been appointed head of the archaeological excavations.

The Office for Cultural Heritage Protection has been coordinating the finances for this project, and it has signed contracts with the other institutions in charge: the Museum of the City of Skopje (director Jovan Šurbanoski, e-mail: jsurbanoski@mt.net) for the needs of the archaeological excavations; National Conservation Centre, for the conservation and rehabilitation activities at Skopje Fortress; Museum of Macedonia for the conservation and rehabilitation activities on the movable archaeological finds from Skopje Fortress.

The team that is implementing the project is made of archaeologists, art historians, architects, conservation experts, geodets, photographs, computer scientists, anthropologists, numusmatists, sketch takers, ceramics experts, etc.
